On July 2nd 2024, our second app, EasySplit, was released on the App Store. You may wonder what it is and how it can be useful. Let’s dive into this FAQ page!
What does EasySplit do?
EasySplit is a mobile app designed to help users effortlessly split bills from a receipt image. It utilizes AI for image detection to capture dish prices, additional charges such as GST and service charges, and any discounts. It can handle cases where individuals order different dishes while also sharing some dishes. EasySplit calculates additional charges proportionally, addressing a common pain point in bill splitting. All you need to do is provide the receipt image and specify who had which dishes—no need to worry about the calculations!
How did the idea come up?
We are a small office located in Singapore, dedicated to creating small, convenient, intuitive, and easy-to-use tools. We love exploring modern technologies like AI to develop useful tools that make people’s lives easier. About a month ago, we discussed what type of app we wished existed or could be more powerful. EasySplit topped our list. As a small office in central Singapore, we often have lunch together, exploring nearby restaurants and food courts. Typically, we’d order together on one bill, and our accountant would then clarify the bill for each individual. This inspired us to use AI to handle the calculations for us!
How do I use EasySplit?
Key steps to using EasySplit:
- Take a photo of your receipt or select one from your album.
- Correct any mistakes in detection with some edits.
- Update the number of people in the meal.
- Drag and drop each individual to assign them to their dishes.
- Click the button to generate a shareable detailed bill image with assignments and costs.
Can I use it without a receipt image?
Yes! If you don’t have a receipt image, you can manually add dish names, prices, and any additional charges. All fields are editable for flexibility. The rest of the process for assigning people remains the same.
How does EasySplit recognize dish names and numbers?
We initially used the OpenAI API since the newly released OpenAI model supports image input and performs well in providing answers in a specific format. However, we encountered two issues: 1) The image recognition in the OpenAI API was not as accurate as direct ChatGPT interactions, and 2) Support for languages other than English was limited.
We then integrated Google Cloud Vision, which significantly improved accuracy and multi-language support. While the AI output might need occasional human correction, we’ll continually work to improve it.
What are the next steps for EasySplit?
We recently released the initial version, v1.0.0, which includes the basic functionality needed to split a bill. However, we have many more features planned, such as:
- Adding friends to customize your friends list and make bill splitting more intuitive.
- Saving history to preserve memories of happy meals with friends.
- Offering the app interface in different languages to reach a broader audience.
- Integrating with payment options to streamline the process of transferring money to friends after splitting the bill.
Where can I get EasySplit?
EasySplit is available on the App Store. You can download it here. We will soon make it accessible for Android users as well.
Is EasySplit open-source?
Yes, EasySplit is open-source. As a startup focused on the latest technologies, we want to share how we utilize modern technologies. The codes is available at this Github open-source repo.
We welcome feedback, suggestions, and possible contributions.
